An innovative blood collection and storage system

The joint project of LB Engineering GbR, the Laboratory for Biofluid Mechanics (ICM) of the German Heart Centre of the Charité and the Kappert working group of the Institute of Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Chemistry and Pathobiochemistry (ILP) of the Charité aims to research a novel blood collection and storage system for primary use in non-hypothesis-driven biobanks and clinical studies.

The Laboratory for Biofluid Mechanics (LfB) at the ICM uses knowledge and methods of fluid mechanics to design and realise individual functional elements. The ILP is involved in this project in close co-operation with the LfB in the technical implementation of the filling of the sample tubes and the preparation of the blood components. In a preclinical study, blood samples are analysed with regard to their cellular and biochemical composition. The medical technology company LB Engineering is in charge of developing and implementing the technology in clinical practice.
