Studies on Vascular Dysfunction and Reduced Perfusion in Patients with ME/CFS
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a severe neuroimmunological disorder that often leads to a high degree of physical and psychological disability. Its cause and pathogenesis remain largely unknown. Consequently, options for the clinical treatment of patients are limited. Significant gaps in knowledge exist, as tissue samples from affected individuals are scarce and comparisons with defined control groups are difficult to conduct.
The goal of the VADYS-ME research consortium is to investigate factors and mechanisms of vascular function and blood flow in ME/CFS using complementary research approaches and methods. To this end, extensive clinical data will be combined with functional tests, complex imaging methods, and metabolic and laboratory analyses in various tissues and organs. Furthermore, the relationship between metabolic changes and mitochondrial function in muscle cells will be examined in greater detail.
This work aims to help define a panel of biomarkers for a vascular signature of the disease. This is intended to improve diagnosis and patient classification and to lay the groundwork for the development of new diagnostic markers and therapeutic strategies for ME/CFS.
