Isabell Esslinger was honored with two awards from the European Society for Artificial Organs (ESAO) for her research in the field of artificial organs.
Her publication, “Platelet adhesion on hard material coatings and bonding agents for ventricular assist devices in a flow chamber,” was honored with the 2026 ESAO-SAGE Research Award. The study examines platelet adhesion to hard coatings and bonding agents used in ventricular assist devices. The ESAO-SAGE Research Award, which comes with a prize of 2,500 euros, recognizes outstanding work by young scientists in the field of artificial organs.
In addition, Isabell Esslinger, together with Rosmarie Schoefbeck from the Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S) at the University of Porto, received the yESAO Research Exchange Award. As part of the program, both researchers were able to spend five days each working at the other’s research site: Rosmarie Schoefbeck was a guest at the ICM, while Isabell Esslinger traveled to Porto for five days.

The joint research project “Linking Zeta Potential to Hemocompatibility of Micro-Structured Ti-6Al-4V: A Comparative Study Using Sheep and Human Blood” focused on the relationship between the zeta potential of microstructured titanium surfaces and their hemocompatibility. The study compared experiments using sheep and human blood.
The yESAO Research Exchange Program is aimed at early-career researchers and enables them to become familiar with research and scientific methodologies at various institutions and to establish international collaborations.
